Negotiating sustainable water solutions: best practices for resolving complex water conflicts involving stakeholder communities. How to successfully involve the community in negotiating about use and allocation of scarce water resources? This can be done by establishing an informal problem-solving forum. The approach is based on techniques that have proven themselves in a variety of water disputes in the US, India, and other parts of the world involving dams, and waterways.
Peter Kamminga co-authored a paper on how to apply this approach in water disputes. It outlines how to apply this stakeholder approach in complex negotiations over the use of water. It was published as a chapter of a handbook for water-professionals and is used in the so-called Water Diplomacy Workshop at Harvard, MIT and TUFTS, training water professionals from around the world how to deal with disputes over water more cooperatively. The chapter was co-authored together with Professor Larry Susskind (MIT) and Dr. Paola Cecchi Dimeglio (Harvard Law School & Harvard Kennedy School) and also appeared in the Interdisciplinary Handbook of Dispute Resolution (Larcier, 2015).
